A phone card is similar to a credit card used to purchase connection minutes for phone calls. A postpaid phone card is more closely related to a credit card than a prepaid phone card because you make your calls without paying anything up front, and get billed later. A prepaid phone card can be more closely compared to a debit card because you have a prepaid balance already in your account and with each call you make, the cost is subtracted from your balance.

Phone cards have been used for decades and continue to be a highly successful product. As long as the need to communicate through phone lines exists, there will be a need for phone cards. Everyone should carry a phone card, whether they need it right away or not, because often times people find themselves in a situation where they need to place a call but do not have the resources to do so. Carrying a phone card with you at all times will ensure that you can place the calls you need to place when you need to place them.

When using phone cards for international calling purposes, keep in mind that calls to different countries carry different rates. So when you call a country with cheaper rates, you will have more minutes available with your balance than you would if you call a country with more expensive rates. When you place a call and connect to your account, you will be told how many minutes you have available for that specific call based on how much money you have left in your account and the rates of the country you are calling.

Phone cards provide both convenience and cost efficiency, especially for international phone calls. If you make many international calls or are a frequent traveler, you should definitely carry a phone card.
